LED Display Calculator: Viewing Distance and Resolution

Work out the minimum and recommended viewing distance, screen resolution and pixel density from pixel pitch and wall size.

The two numbers buyers ask about most often are viewing distance and resolution, and both follow directly from pixel pitch and wall size. These calculators use the same rule of thumb published in our LED display viewing distance guide: the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is the pixel pitch in millimetres multiplied by 1 to 1.5. Everything is calculated in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere.

1. Viewing distance from pixel pitch

Enter the pixel pitch of the screen you are specifying.

2. Screen resolution and pixel density

Enter the wall size and the pixel pitch. Resolution is the wall size divided by the pitch.

3. Reference table: pitch, distance and typical use

Minimum comfortable distance = pitch × 1 m; recommended = pitch × 1.5 m.

How these LED display calculations work

Viewing distance. The industry rule of thumb is that the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is the pixel pitch in millimetres multiplied by one to one and a half. A P2.5 screen is therefore comfortable from about 2.5 m and recommended from around 3.8 m. Closer than the minimum, the individual LEDs become visible and text starts to look pixelated.

Resolution. Screen resolution is simply the physical wall size divided by the pixel pitch. A 6 m wide wall at P2.5 is 6 ÷ 0.0025 = 2,400 pixels wide. Height works the same way. Pixel density is the reciprocal, expressed in pixels per square metre.

Cabinet count. Cabinet counts assume the standard 500 × 500 mm cabinet used across much of our rental and fine-pitch range. A wall that does not divide exactly will need custom cabinet sizes — see our cabinet size guide.

What this calculator does not cover: power draw and heat load. Those depend on the specific product's average and maximum power figures, which are listed per model rather than derivable from pitch. Use the specification sheet for the series you are considering, or read our power distribution guide and cooling and ventilation guide.

FAQ

What is the viewing distance for a P3 LED screen?
Using the pitch × 1 to 1.5 rule, a P3 screen is comfortable from about 3 m and best from around 4.5 m.

How do I calculate the resolution of an LED wall?
Divide the physical width by the pixel pitch. A 6 m wall at P2.5 is 6 ÷ 0.0025 = 2,400 px wide; a 3.375 m height is 1,350 px. The aspect ratio follows the wall dimensions, not the resolution.

Does a smaller pixel pitch always mean a better screen?
No. A finer pitch costs more per square metre and only helps if the audience sits close enough to resolve it. Beyond the recommended distance you are paying for pixels nobody can see.

Can I work out power consumption from pitch?
Not reliably. Power depends on the drive scheme, brightness and content. Use the average and maximum power figures on the specification sheet for the series you are considering.
